Collaborate across boundaries at work and in the community to leverage differences and activate creative possibilities.

The COVID-19 pandemic has transformed how millions of people work and communicate. A majority of knowledge workers now work remotely and at a distance from their colleagues. 40% or more of these workers will not return to a shared physical location when we recover from the pandemic. With this current reality and forecast, how will we connect and work better together across teams, business units, companies and sectors?

Here’s another challenge that affects us all. People around the world have seemingly become more divided around such issues of race, politics, economic policy, religious beliefs, and culture. How do we interact and work with those who think, act, or vote differently than ourselves? Without the requisite skills, we lose our ability and motivation to communicate and collaborate around issues of common concern.

Interaction Associates and Vantage Partners -- pioneers in facilitated collaboration, stakeholder alignment, and workforce productivity – would like to share some of their best practices for working better together across distances and differences. At this event, you’ll receive practical ideas, skills, and tools for helping people work together and activate possibilities – regardless of the conversational topic or relationship at hand.

Getting Past "No"

Room 1 | 2:20 - 3:10pm, ET

Speaker: Carol Bonett, Partner, Vantage Partners

Situation and Challenge
When someone says no to us, we often resort to telling them all the reasons they are wrong. Pushing someone to agree with us can leave them feeling unheard, disrespected, and pressured. A better approach to influence is to first understand why our counterpart saying no to us makes sense to them. What are their underlying wants, needs, concerns, and fears - why they are really saying no? You can’t change someone’s mind until you know what they are really thinking, by putting yourself in their shoes.

Session Purpose
In order to influence someone, you must first understand their perspective, and be open to persuasion and change yourself. During the session, the facilitator will share the Currently Perceived Choice (CPC) tool as an easy-to-use approach to quickly understand why someone is saying no to you. Once you have a better understanding of their perspective, you can more easily move to shared understanding, and find a way forward.

What You’ll Learn

  • Identifying why someone might react poorly when you are trying to influence them
  • Analyzing what your counterpart is hearing you ask; it may not be what you think!
  • Getting in the other person’s shoes: understanding why saying no to you make sense to them
  • Identifying ways to overcome their resistance without being manipulative

Build Trust & Rapport in the Virtual Workplace

Room 2 | 2:20 - 3:10pm, ET

Speaker: Barry Rosen, CEO, Interaction Associates; Eve Keller, Director, Project Management, Interaction Associates

Situation and Challenge
Distributed team members often express frustration in getting connected and experiencing a sense of team affinity. Trust and rapport are the bonding elements that help virtual teams build momentum to perform on a consistent basis. They form the foundation of collaborative effectiveness in a digital work environment.

Session Purpose
Learn essential ingredients for staying connected and building trust with co-workers and teammates who work in different locations: dependability, values congruence, transparency, competence, and consideration.

What You’ll Learn

  • Why maintaining trust is so important for virtual teams and distributed work groups
  • How your behavior can hinder earning the trust of your teammates and colleagues
  • Practical strategies you can implement to build trust in your virtual team
  • Keys to establishing a foundation of trust in your organization culture

Talking to the Other Side

Room 1 | 3:20 - 4:10pm, ET

Speakers: Mary Gelinas, Managing Director, Gelinas James; Davida Sharpe, Learning & Development Consultant, Private Practice; Eve Keller, Director of Project Management, Interaction Associates; Barry Rosen, CEO, Interaction Associates

Situation and Challenge
According to Robert Sapolsky, neuroendocrinology researcher, we are built and programmed to experience and identify people with whom we have differences as The OtherThe Other means other than me or us. In a phrase we often hear at work and in the community, we’re referring to The Other Side.

In the wake of the 2020 U.S. Elections and the Capitol Hill riot, we are feeling alarmed, frightened and otherwise very upset. These events, along with others of 2020 (e.g., Black Lives Matter support demonstrations) have triggered personal questions and dilemmas about how we engage with people, whether we agree or disagree.

How do we understand, talk, and interact with The Other Side?

Session Purpose
In this interactive conversation, we’ll explore how we can bring out the best in ourselves and each other. We'll discuss how we can do this in our speaking and listening, watching and interpreting, and daily communications at work and in the community – particularly when we disagree.

Questions Addressed

  • Who are The Other Side?
  • How should we talk with people with whom we disagree or have competing interests?
  • What lessons can we draw from successful businesses, voter engagement initiatives, and community partnerships in deciding when and how to talk to The Other Side

Ask Better Questions to Get Better Solutions

Room 2 | 3:20 - 4:10pm, ET

Speakers: Jay Cone, Senior Consultant, Interaction Associates; Lisa Weaver, Director, Client Solutions, Interaction Associates

Situation and Challenge
We are creatures of habit. When faced with a challenge at work, we ask similar kinds of questions, for example: How do we get people to do their jobs? Where will we find the time to finish this project?

These sound like reasonable questions. But more likely, these questions are traps that prevent us from seeing the big picture, limit creative problem-solving, and lead us to poor decisions.

Session Purpose
Participants learn how to spot limiting and biased questions (mental quicksand) and to fashion powerful questions and problem statements using a practical tool: The Unstuck Minds Compass.

What You’ll Learn

  • Why search for better questions?
  • Bias & thinking traps
  • Four types of better questions
  • After you have a better question, then what?
