What I Care About

I care about the quality of our conversations, about finding out what's really going on between people. We are doing things, taking action all the time, and not stopping enough to ask ourselves or each other "Why?" A lot of people tell me not to ask "Why?" They say it makes people defensive. What it really does is make people a little uncomfortable, but people can tolerate a lot more discomfort than we think. Socrates said, "The unexamined life is not worth living." Take it a step further. The late Abe Rosenthal, former editor of the NY Times said, "When something important is going on, silence is a lie." Speak up. Let yourself be heard. Take a risk.

Values as foundation: the role of values in leadership and organizations
